PHILIP JABLON

Philip Jablon is an American-born researcher and photographer based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He has been chronicling the last days of the stand-alone movie theater throughout Southeast Asia since 2009 as part of his Southeast Asia Movie Theater Project. From this, Philip created the advocacy-focused Movie Theater Preservation Initiative, through which he promotes the preservation of at least one stand-alone movie theater in every metropolitan area within ASEAN.

Philip’s interest in stand-alone movie theaters coincides with his vision of architecturally diverse, culturally rich, sustainable cities. He enjoys the interplay of city and cinema hall, as well as the historical function that stand-alone theaters played in the development of modern societies.

His work has been supported by the Jim Thompson Foundation and the Thai Film Archive, and widely covered in print media and on Thai television. Philip has selected images from his Southeast Asia Movie Project exclusively for Bangkok Edge Festival. http://seatheater.blogspot.com/
